Day 13: My Dream Job (30 day drawing challenge)

Space is a wide open vacuum thats always expanding.. and I'd feel claustrophobic as hell in space.  Not to mention I almost puked while on a ferris wheel.  I'll stick to drawing astronauts puking in space, thank you.

In A World Where the Internet Doesn't Exist!

I really want to get this topic out of my head.. and what better way than to show a gopher bashing it's own brains out before buying a scammy cable television package that provides him at max 2 hours of quality content a week?

I think it's kind of ridiculous what people pay for when it comes to cable television.  Sometimes I think that the only reason people buy it is to have something to mindlessly flip through after work while saying "1000 channels and theres nothing on!"

The whole package plan thing requires you pay around 100-200 dollars a month.. or less if they pull you into a contract with a bogus discount. That money doesn't even go to a specific channel or program you enjoy. I read somewhere that ESPN/ESPN HD gets 4 dollars of your bill no matter what.  Meanwhile, say you like the SyFy channel, 21 cents goes to SyFy a month. Your 21 cents doesn't pay for specific programs you enjoy.. and the company is more likely to pay for the cheaper project.. like reality TV.  Lets not even go over what happens when your favorite show goes on a 4 month break after 6 episodes.  Reality shows and winter olympics?  Ugh.

You could support your favorite TV shows more by just paying 2.99 on itunes each week (assuming that apple doesn't take some ridiculous amount of profit from selling the episodes).  And you'd save massively.

At this point with the technology we are capable of it's like these cable/satellite companies are really just scamming everyone. I can't even see a younger adult who understands the internet even intelligently paying for a package plan. It's a waste of your hard earned money.

Gopherk yourself cable/satellite providers.  Lets move on to digital media now.

Comic #7!

lol Of course this would probably create some sort of time paradox.. or create an alternate universe where only alternate universe me would benefit from the excruciating torment of some strange fat hairy guy threatening to kill me if I didn't read more books and draw more.

Speaking of books, I've been slowly reading Scott McCloud's Making Comics.  I'm enjoying it so far!  I've done a few of the exercises from the first chapter.. Dog Eats Dog and Choice of Frame (which I could use input on!  I have four more frames to draw.  I need you to tell me what happens next!)

If your adblock is off there will be a quick link to the Making Comics book on Amazon.  Definitely worth the price!

Making Comics Exercise #5 - Choice of Frame!

Gonna need some help with this exercise from the book Making Comics by Scott McCloud.

Sketch a 16-panel grid on a piece of typing paper with a simple standing figure in the first panel.  Ask a friend to decide what your character should do in panel two.  Draw the suggestion and consider whether it was necessary to change the viewing angle.   If your character encounters an elephant, do you have to pull back?  If he she clips a toenail, do you have to pull in?  Do any of the suggestions require a tilt or rotation of viewing angle?  Do any require a change of elevation?  Repeat until the page is filled!

EDIT:  I kind of like the lineart more than I do the colored version.. so it's going on top! lol

Easy linkage to Scott McCloud's Making Comics on Amazon below (If your adblock is off).  So far it's been worth it, and everyone always recommends his books to me.

Making Comics by Scott McCloud

Reading Making Comics by Scott McCloud.  At the end of the first chapter there are a few exercises to do.  "Dog eat dog, dog burps, dog figure skates" is one of the options for the third exercise.  This is what I originally pictured in my head.. lol

If your adblock is off I'll leave a quick link to Making Comics by Scott McCloud. .  Everyone has been recommending this book to me.

I also attempted exercise #1: Choice of Moment in which you had to split your favorite movie into 16 frames.. gotta admit, this was kind of difficult. lol  I decided not to sketch it all out because it would've taken too long.  First I had over 30.. but I got there eventually.  Does it retain enough information to tell the story?

Heres 16:

Also said to try and drop that down to 8..

Comic #4: Jungle Buzzard Hopkins!

For years I've had the idea for a hobo who was always scheming for money and always failing.. but for whatever reason I couldn't gather up the courage to actually make a comic.  But the last few comics have made me want to do something more substantial..  I want to be hooked to the characters, the world, and the story like my favorite movies and shows.  I hope I can manage to do that.  It may not be the best at first, but as time goes on I'm more than certain it will become something good.  Just gotta put my mind to it.

Without further ado, I present to you the first iteration of Jungle Buzzard Hopkins. Jungle Buzzard is something you'd call a hobo when steals from another hobo.

If you have any feedback, give it!  Doesn't matter if it's harsh as long as it helps me become better as an artist in some way.

Comic #2

I feel like I'm cheating myself out of improvement by not pushing myself.. so I might just do two comics a week.  If they're crap.. they're crap.  Thats the point.  You don't get better without practicing and drawing every day!

It's been 7 days since I made that new years resolution on a whim 2 hours before the ball dropped.  Others were dealing with nicotine addictions and exercise routines daily.. struggling not to break their resolutions.  I was screwing around for a large majority of the time with very little thought going into the next comic. lol  What i did manage to scribble down on a sticky note was "Hobo, stirafoam butt creek, anatomy - hahaha weiners".

I'm super ashamed of the colored one.. so I'm just going to shrink it and hope no one sees it.

Comic #1

 New Years Resolution comic?

I think this explains it all.  I spend too much time NOT DOING when I should be DOING.  Too much worrying about how crappy something is and not enough time actually drawing crappy things to get better.
